Choosing a Drug Rehab

When attending any drug rehab, all aspects of what caused the drug addiction problem need to be addressed. When looking for a drug rehab, make sure it has a high success rate and competent staff. Every drug rehab program is different. They differ in philosophies, treatment methods, and cost. For many, it is hard to know what to look for in a quality addiction treatment program.

Drug and alcohol rehabs must address the specific needs of each individual. In general, most drug addicts are good people. It is the crippling manifestation of drug addiction and alcoholism that changes the character and decays the ethics and morals of people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. The most successful drug rehab centers will help the individual re-acquire the ethics and morals that once existed before drugs entered into their lives. The most common statement heard in the drug rehab field is "He or she was such a wonderful person before they started using drugs." It is the responsibility of any rehab center to help restore the individual to their former self, as they were before they started using drugs. Actually, some of the better alternative treatment methods can help the individual to exceed all former capabilities. Our world today is filled with drugs, violence caused by drug and alcohol abuse, and ineffective drug and alcohol rehabilitation methods. Drugs are promoted as the solution to all problems. This includes prescription medication. Knowledge and education in the area we are having problems has always been the most effective solution to any problem including drug addiction and alcoholism. Acquiring the life skills necessary for resolving the problems life presents on a daily basis and teaching drug abusers how to live comfortably without drugs and alcohol should be the primary function of drug rehab centers.

Traditional drug addiction treatment modalities advocate that alcoholism and drug addiction are diseases and the individual is a victim of their misfortune. This is untrue! Drug and alcohol use is a choice, just like any other bad decisions we make in life. We understand of course that this fact becomes blurred over time as drugs and alcohol completely take physical and mental control over the person. However, through our program, the individual can eventually gain complete control over their addiction.

Attending a long term drug rehab center helps drug addicted individuals by removing them from their re-stimulating environment. This provides the person a safe place that is far removed from drug connections and allows them to focus on their program. There is no quick fix for drug addiction and alcoholism. Recovery is often a long process. There should be little focus on time in the early stages of treatment. The skills one learns during intensive drug rehab must be integrated into everyday life, and this takes time.

When conventional drug rehab methods are not working with a drug or alcohol abuser, there are effective recovery alternatives to pursue before giving up. Drug substitute treatment is the use of Methadone, anti-depressants, or other prescribed medications that are designed to mask the symptoms of drug and alcohol abuse & addiction. This, in effect, just trades one drug addiction for another and has not proven very successful. In fact, they often begin to abuse the substituted drug as they seek the high they were once able to achieve with their original drug of choice. It does not aid the addicted person in the rehabilitation of life skills necessary to raise their moral values and their quality of life.

Attending a drug rehab offering treatment that is neither psychiatric nor medical may be the answer that so many are looking for. Those who have tried other forms of treatment may find that a social education model of recovery is the key to their success in recovering from drug or alcohol addiction. This form of treatment is entirely drug-free. The program would not use drugs or medications of any kind to solve the problems caused by drugs. It would use nutrition and nutritional supplements as an important component of its treatment. Also, treatment would provide a specific course of addiction rehabilitation treatment which includes training in communication, full body detoxification treatment process, counseling in problem identification and solving, as well as counseling in personal values and integrity. This form of addiction recovery will help the individual accomplish heightened moral standards and sobriety with an improved quality of life.

The social education treatment method is not a traditional 12 step program. Most drug and alcohol rehabilitation methods today rely on a combination of 12 step recovery methods along with group therapy to handle the addiction problem. While some people respond to this type of treatment, unfortunately the majority do not. In fact, similar to the staggeringly low percentage of people who are able to stop on their own, only 1 or 2 people out of 10 who go through traditional treatment may successfully end their drug or alcohol "career" for life.

It is vital that a drug rehab be able to handle all types of drug addiction including: heroin, cocaine, crack, meth, marijuana, ecstasy, prescription drugs and alcohol. The ability to accomplish a complete recovery must be based on the belief that an individual is not powerless, and in fact, must take responsibility for his or her own actions. Graduates of a successful drug rehab are individuals who can stand on their own feet and live drug-free, productive lives.
